You can request your FREE DD214 from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) using the following information below or by visiting the National website HERE. Follow the insructions carefully on how to fill out the request! Turnaround times for records requested from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) vary greatly depending on the nature of the request. For example, the NPRC Military Records Facility currently has a backlog of over 200,000 requests and receives approximately 5,000 requests daily. Routine requests for separation statements currently require 4-5 weeks for servicing. The average turnaround time on all requests is currently 14-16 weeks; however, requests that involve reconstruction efforts due to the 1973 fire may take much longer.

With access to a printer and the Adobe Acrobat Reader software available below, you may download and print a copy of the Standard Form 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records. The Standard Form 180 is formatted for legal size paper (8.5' x 14'). Please print that way if your printer can accommodate that.   • Option 2: Send your request as a letter to the National Archives and Records Administration. Requests must contain enough information to identify the record among the more than 70 million on file at NPRC (MPR). Certain basic information is needed to locate military service records. This information includes the veteran's complete name used while in service, service number or social security number, branch of service, and dates of service. Date and place of birth may also be helpful, especially if the service number is not known. If the request pertains to a record that may have been involved in the 1973 fire, also include place of discharge, last unit of assignment, and place of entry into the service, if known.

    There are a few exceptions to the 7 business day turnaround. Pre-1970 USMC DD214’s are located by reference to the service member’s Marine Corps Serial Number (dog-tag number). If you do not have this number, the process will be slowed down while we search for the Marine Corps Serial Number as a preliminary step. If you have a common name, this process can be challenging.

    In general, older records take slightly longer than more-recent records. Pre-1955 records are considered “archival” records, and these can take a few days longer than Post-1955 USMC DD214 requests. Some recent USMC records are not at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. If this is the case, we will send you a digital link so that you can login and print out copies of your DD214.
